An open letter to my 23-year-old self

Hey you. You got into the habit of writing these on your 21st birthday and three years later, it’s stuck. Normally you do it actually on your birthday, but you’re late this year because you’ve been having such a good time. Remember that.

23 has been one hell of a year. It’s been up and down, but for the first time in a while, mostly up!

At age 23, you’ll finally get closure on a situation that’s been plaguing you for 5 years and you can start to get your life back on track. It’s been a long time coming, and emotionally very stressful, but it’s behind you now.

You went into 23 not realising how bad a place you were in. You’d started to accept it, but you thought you were good. Spoiler: you weren’t. You’re going to go into a dark place for a while, but the thing is, you kind of need to. It takes that dark place to realise that something needs to change.

Therapy will help. You’re going to spend a year in there begrudgingly, but you’re going to learn some useful skills and actually start applying them to your life to make positive changes. It’ll be good for you, much as you won’t realise it at the time.

Leaping into age 24 | an open letter to my 23 year old self

Your heart will get broken again. That’s becoming something of a given these days. Some promises weren’t upheld and it really sucked. But, you’ll get over it quicker than you think you will. You’re going to be better off without that stress in your life. You’ll be happier in yourself and you’ll be happy spending some time on your own.

When you look back, it’s amazing how much has happened in 12 short months. You’ve moved into a flat you love with your best friend, worked with some of your favourite brands, got your head straight about things and started living in the moment.

You’re going to have a lot of good experiences while you’re 23 years old. Old friendships will be rekindled. New friends will be made. You’ll see some of your favourite bands live, go to some great festivals, It’s going to be a good year, so embrace it day by day.

You usually hate your birthday, but 24 is going to be a good one. All of your best friends are going to come out, you’re going to have a few celebrations including Portsmouth Pride, a chill evening on the common, a local caberet show and a night out. All of them are going to excellent, so look forward to it.

24 is going to start with a bang. Have a great year.
