Slam Dunk Festival is one of those which, every year, is just incredible.
2019 for me has had one of the best lineups of recent years; there were bands I am in love with now, bands that I grew up with as a teenager and new emerging bands who I’m just getting into.
Since they moved Slam Dunk out of the university and to Hatfield House park last year, it’s felt much more like your typical festival so it really solidifies the start of festival season. There were a few issues this year with the bar queues being absolutely ridiculous due to unprepared (and just lack of) staff but aside from that the day was great.
Top Moments of Slam Dunk Festival 2019
4: Busted being the secret band
I saw a load of people shitting on this, but Busted being the secret band was hilarious! The giant tent they played in was packed out. Honestly just watching their set was so funny. It was a great throwback to my childhood/formative years and everyone was vibing and having a good time. I never expected to spend my weekend moshing to Busted, but I’m here for it.
3: Cancer Bats going nuts
Cancer Bats are one of the bands I’ve seen most live because they always put on an incredible show. Slammy D was no different of course, they had mad energy on stage and brought it like they do every single time.
2: All Time Low headlining
Ok, ok, I’ll admit I shit on All Time Low headlining when it was announced. However, after listening to them a bit more and remembering how much I used to love them as a band, I believe they were totally worthy of the slot. It wasn’t the best Slam Dunk headline show I’ve ever seen (Enter Shikari 2k17 win that title) but it was a hell of a lot of fun.
1: Grandson’s entire set
Grandson is an artist I fell straight into over the course of the last year or so. Bringing his “peaceful but forceful demonstration of anti-fascist anti-hate rock and roll resistance” to the UK was everything I needed and he had the best crowd of the day. The set was incredible, he’s a brilliant performer and I’m so glad I finally got to see him live.
